THE BIRTH OF
GLOBAL INSTRUCTION
FOR VETERINARY
EMPOWERMENT
Â
In the early days of 2022, Dr. Mariana Pardo set off on a spay/neuter expedition to Guatemala with FARVets, a spirited nonprofit dedicated to championing animal welfare worldwide. Little did she know this journey would spark the flame that ignited Global Instruction for Veterinary
Empowerment (GIVE).
Understanding the winding road that led Dr. Pardo to this pivotal trip is paramount. She started her journey in veterinary medicine at Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile, her homeland. Despite the guidance of remarkable mentors, she yearned for exposure to board-certified veterinarians versed in advanced specialty medicine—a rarity outside the USA, Europe, and Australia.
Determined to chase her dreams, Dr. Pardo set her sights on the USA to pursue board certification in emergency and critical care. Nearly a decade later, her perseverance paid off, and she proudly earned her stripes as a board-certified emergency and critical care specialist. Yet, her journey didn't end there. As a foreign veterinarian, she braved the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) process, mastering skills like dog spaying—bringing her full circle to Guatemala.
At the heart of this captivating adventure, Dr. Pardo seized the chance to enlighten eager students, and armed with a portable point-of-care ultrasound and her unwavering expertise in critical care, she delivered a level of care previously beyond reach to this particular indigenous community. This transformative experience left her with a stirring sense that more could be done...
